May 7: Friends Movie is On the Waterfront
On May 7, the Friends of the Geneva Public Library present the film On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, at 7:00pm in the library community room.
This 1954 Academy Award-winning film is considered Brando's greatest performance, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Directed by Elia Kazan, the film won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture.
Eva Marie Saint makes her debut in the film and won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
There are also fine performances by Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, and Rod Steiger, all of whom were nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
The theme of the movie is steeped in the social issues of poverty, homelessness, and political corruption.
As an added side note, the soundtrack score was composed by Leonard Bernstein, which also was nominated for an Oscar in 1954 for Best Music.
The Friends of Geneva Public Library is a not-for-profit organization that supports the Geneva Public Library and the Geneva Reads Initiative.
