May 4: Reading Between the Lines: Final Payments by Mary Gordon

On Sunday, May 4, the final discussion in a series of examinations of four contemporary novels on women and religion is a discussion of Final Payments by Mary Gordon, an examination of a New York Irish-Catholic community that the New York Times called a "remarkable" first novel.

This is the fourth and final 90-minute book discussion in a joint Geneva Public Library and Hobart & William Smith Colleges Fisher Center program entitled Re-Thinking Religion: Recent Women Novels and American Identity. Participants have met monthly to explore four novels by women that involve the quest for meaningful religious experience in contemporary American society.

The program is part of the New York Humanities Council "Reading Between the Lines" adult book discussion series.

Richard Salter, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Hobart & William Smith, leads the discussions.
